In today’s economy people are working harder and finding less time to get everything on their schedule done. As a result, people and companies are willing to pay money for services that will make their lives a little easier. This week, I picked up a copy of Entrepreneur Magazine’s startup series book entitled Start Your Own Personal Concierge Service, and was intrigued with the examples I found of people who have built successful businesses by providing a valuable service to corporations or individuals.
The word concierge comes from the French word comte des cierges, meaning keeper of the candles. This was simply someone who attended to the needs of visiting noblemen at castles during medieval times.
The corporate concierge is often hired by the company to serve their employee’s needs by picking up dry cleaning, ordering dinner, making travel arrangements and planning events. The same goes for busy individuals who are interested in having someone do their grocery shopping, interior decorating, gift buying and other miscellaneous errands.
In addition to needing someone to help with business and personal errands, some executives or professionals also need help getting organized, and will pay incredible fees for someone who can help make their work a little more efficient.
Concierges often charge $25 to $125 per hr depending on the type of service they are providing for their customer, with some earning as much as $125,000 or more a year depending on their location and the type of clients they take on. What a great admonition - Don't Fear Failure! It sounds so simple and so easy to achieve when you see it like that, but when it comes to life changing decisions that we all face, we often get sweaty palms, weak knees, and panic attacks at the thought of failing. But, unfortunately, failure is unavoidable. All successful people have failures in their past, and many will tell you that their failures have led them to the success they have today. It is hard to believe sometimes, though, when you see people that seem to have it all, that they have ever failed. Imagine if Thomas Edison had quit after he failed the 9,999th time in his attempt to invent the incandescent light bulb! Or what if Ray Charles had listened to the advice of one of his teachers..."You can't play the piano, and God knows you can't sing. You'd better learn to weave chairs so you can support yourself." Or what if Mary Kay Ash had listened to her attorney just weeks before she opened her first store..."Liquidate the business right now and recoup whatever cash you can. If you don't, you'll end up penniless."
