Saturated, superheated, and wet are the three primary types of steam that can be measured with a steam flow meter. 
How do you know which is best for your company?
Saturated steam can become superheated steam, most commonly in a boiler environment. Wet steam is the most difficult to measure, and in turn offers the most subjectivity when it comes to accuracy. Within these three major types of steam, there are numerous types of steam flow meters. Pinpointing which is best for you depends on your needs, environment, and personal preferences. 
Start with the Biggies
Differential pressure-based flow meters are perhaps the most common, and relies on a pressure drop for accuracy. This flow meter uses orifice plates—basically holes—that allow the liquid (steam) to move, and the flow rate is calculated by a differential pressure transmitter. These meter might also have a flow nozzle, which is a small opening that allows steam to escape in lieu of an orifice plate.
Another option within the differential pressure-based flow meter family are venturi tubes. These tubes are tapered, which provides a lower pressure drop than orifice plates. However, due to the unique shape of venturi tubes, they are tough to inspect and manufacture. This can lead to trouble with maintenance and a higher up-front cost. 
Flow Meter Alternatives
Differential pressure-based flow meters aren't everyone’s top choice. Vortex flow meters are picking up popularity, and are based on a design derived from their name. Analyzing multiple vortexes within a tube are a great way to calculate flow rate. The total cost is similar to that of differential pressure-based options.
Ultrasonic flow meters utilize a completely different approach. The time an ultrasonic pulse takes to travel along a slanted pipe is measured to provide a fairly accurate flow rate. Obviously, traveling against the flow will take longer. It’s the disparity between going against the flow and with it that gives you the flow rate. 
A Final Option
Coriolis flow meters might seem relatively simple, but they are very accurate. This meter simply measures the amassed flow within tubes, which causes twisting. However much the tubes are twisted is in direct correlation to the amount of flow. There aren't any bells and whistles with this approach, which is exactly what some engineers prefer.
When assessing flow meters, it’s important to consider accuracy, cost, maintenance, and simply how much you like one over the other. For some, accuracy is critical while ease of use is a priority for others. It doesn't matter how fantastic a flow meter is if you don’t care for its approach. Choose carefully, and consider the pros and cons of each.
