History

Indiana General Assembly established Indiana State University as Indiana State Normal School in December, 1865. The School was later renamed as Indiana State Teachers College in 1929 which was renamed as Indiana State College in 1961. Finally it was named as Indiana State University in 1965. The university was started with an aim to educate elementary and school teachers. But the growth with years made it diversify into educating other sections of the society.

The University is currently classified as a fourth tier university. The university is presently classified as a Doctoral/Research university by Carnegie classification. Indiana State University is accredited to North central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Graduate and Nursing programs offered by Indiana University are regularly rated in the Top 100 programs in US.

Courses Offered

Indiana State University offers a chance to its students to pursue major programs in hundred plus disciplines. College of Arts and Sciences offers graduation, major and doctoral programs in Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environment Studies, Criminology, Economics, Political Science and Theatre to name a few. This centre also has Centre for Urban and Environmental Change.

Donald W Scott College of business is one of the best business schools around. It is accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Indiana State University also has Centre of Technology dealing with research in modern fields like Aerospace, Electronics and Computer, Manufacturing and Construction Technology and Workforce development.

Uniqueness

The university is spread over 200 acres, full of scenic beauty and has eight man-made lakes. The buildings are made of limestone and brick, which is spread over 93 acres. It was also the first public university to make a laptop compulsory for every freshman. The university has over the thousands students attached to the various courses. The students at Indiana State University come from diverse background with over 2.4% international students and 17.9% minority students.
