History

Jackson University also known by the name of Mississippi 's urban University was established in 1877 as a private school. The aim behind it was to educate the newly freed and underprivileged blacks. In 1883 it was renamed as Jackson College . The college shifted to its new and present campus after 1902.Later Mississippi took control of the university in order to train its teachers. JSU was awarded the university status in 1974.
