Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP has current version 10.0, historically this application was also known as Great Plains Dynamics, eEnteprise and its DOS predecessor Great Plains Accounting. At this time, June 2009, GP 10 has Service Pack 3 and this places you into reliable position to decide on version update. If this is something you considering now, please read these highlights to get initial orientation

Normally upgrade process has database and user workstations upgrade.  We will review both in brief:

1.       One Step Upgrade from GP 9.0 or 8.0.  Before you begin,Dynamics GP Partner San Diego, Chicago Newsflash: Great Plains Upgrade path Articles please take into consideration, that we assume, that you do not have third party Add-ons or Customizations.  Here, you will need first to apply 8.0 Service Pack 5 or latest on 9.0 and only then launch Great Plains 10.0 installation from CD1.  Very high probability, that Dexterity components will fail to install, then you should read about technology to Skip Dexterity Components check, coming together with Skip Don Net check.  When you made work around, please apply recent Dynamics GP 10.0 Service pack, SP3 is preferred, but SP 2 also does  the job.  At this point you are ready to launch Dynamics GP Utilities to begin Server Upgrade.  Here you update you system database Dynamics and then move on to each of your company DB update.  Depending on the size of your Companies in GB, expect up to several hours here.  If you have one company only and its space is below 1GB, expect something like 30 minutes.  Workstations upgrade was recommended for earlier versions, for GP 10.0, you may consider to load GP workstation into default folder: Microsoft Dynamics\GP and then tune up your modified reports location Reports.dic accordingly

2.       Multistep Upgrade from Great Plains 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0, and also from Great Plains Select on Pervasive SQL Server 2000/Btrieve or Ctree.  Here you definitely need professional Dynamics GP consultant help.  Upgrade path should be carefully determined.  If your GP install doesn’t have third party ISV custom add-ons, and if you are on 7.5, for example, consider upgrading 7.5->9.0 in the first step and then go 9.0->10.0 described in the first paragraph

3.       Migration from Great Plains Select on Pervasive/Ctree.  We recommend to do this step on Dynamics GP 7.5 version, you will need migration tool.  Migration tool has pretty comprehensive manual, where you should learn how to install GP on MS SQL Server with similar GL account format, then create empty companies and then the tool will move all your tables content from Pervasive or Ctree to MS SQL Server based tables

4.       Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Windows migration.  Here again there is migration tool, which should move you from GPA 9.5 for Dos/Windows to Dynamics GP 7.5 on MS SQL Server 2000

5.       GP Add-ons and Customizations upgrade.  If you deploy popular Dynamics GP ISV partner add-ons, then you should contact this Great Plains ISV customization company and check on the upgrade process.  If you have unique GP Dexterity customization, please try to contact your initial Great Plains Dexterity programmer.  In most cases, Great Plains Dex customizations could not be upgraded without Dexterity programmer involvement.  We carry Great Plains Dexterity Software Development factory, feel free to contact our office at 1-866-528-0577, help@albaspectrum.com
