A laptop is extensively used by consumers these days. It is perfectly normal for a laptop to be used for more than 10 to 12 hours per day. Most of the modern laptops come with very good cooling solutions employed underneath its skin. Which helps keep it within operating range even when used for continuously long periods of time.
However most of the older laptops cannot take the heat of being used for long hours. Some of these laptops were not built for purpose of being punished like that. In addition to that the vents of old laptops get clogged by dust bunnies. People who are familiar with dissembling a laptop make sure to take out the heat sink and fan and to blow the dust between the fins of the heat sink with an air can. But not everybody is qualified to do this which leads to blocking of vents and increase in temperature. This can prove lethal for your laptop.
There are two ways to cool a laptop active and passive. An active laptop cooling pad consist of a conductive pad that has fans at the bottom which blow air into the vents and help keep the laptop cool. These cooling pads require power source in form of adaptor or even a USB powered port.
A passive cooling pad offers conductive material without needing any power supply. These pads employ a kind of gel or a slat compound that assists them absorb heat from under the laptop. The bottom of a laptop consists of a material which is slip resistant which prevents the pad and also the laptop from accidentally slipping from your lap and may destroy your precious laptop.
These pads have Sodium Sulfate Dec hydrate. Which melts as soon as the heat from laptop increases and absorbs the heat produced. Should the laptop is turned off these crystal phase and turn back into solid.

However such passive cooling option is not suggested for laptops that have fans at the bottom. As this can make things worse than help. The material could block the vents preventing the fan from sucking in fresh air to circulate through the laptop and cool the processor.
Such passive laptop cooling pads would be best suitable for the Apple collection of laptops.
