Turnarounds of refinery

Turnarounds of a refinery aren’t something that can be just done. Normally a planned turnaround is getting done every four years when maintenance of machinery needs to be done. Or, an emergency turnaround needs to be done when a machine breaks down.

During the turnaround, some inspections are taking place often to make sure that everything is still running smoothly. And, that no one is put in danger while working. It should be supervised by experienced supervisors and reports need to be filled in on a regular basis. Everything that is happening during the turnaround needs to be documented. 

Shutdowns of refinery

Unlike turnarounds that are planned beforehand to make sure that everything is running smoothly, a shutdown is sudden.  Normally the shutdown happens suddenly because of an emergency. It can be because of a lack of natural gas, or because of an essential machine that has broken. An accident at the refinery is also causing a complete shutdown, and restarting is taking the time.

Sudden power loss can also cause this type of shutdown. The problem is that not only does a refinery lose money during a shutdown, restarting the refinery is a process that takes time and that can be risky and dangerous. Only special people at the refinery is able to shut down the refinery and is able to make sure that the right process is followed in an emergency.

It should be planned correctly for the safety of the workers and equipment

Even with a shutdown that isn’t something that can be planned, there are things that management needs to consider before it can be done. The first thing to always consider is the safety of the workers. In case of an emergency, the equipment isn’t as important as the safety of the workers.

However, with a turnaround, it is important to plan everything beforehand to ensure both the safety of the workers and the equipment. And, there needs to be a plan to ensure that the full function of the refinery is taking place as soon as possible again.
