Using oil on canvas,Bekir Smolski’s Atmospheric Environments Articles Bekir Smolski creates environments that blur the line between fantasy and reality. Light falls gently on each landscape, sculpting glowing, quiet images. Still trees, sand, and ice freeze in time under the tight strokes of Smolski’s brush. The impact of weather and light is apparent in each scene, leaving streaks and textured detail on the smoothly painted natural features.  Smolski’s work at times takes a surreal turn. In some pieces, stone and wooden points curve impossibly across canvases, glowing at their tips. Faceted earth and flora slope through each canvas, working in contained color palettes to create atmospheric scenes. The subjects are emphasized in contrast to the subtle natural color and luminous glow that dominates each piece. In some work, figures are integrated into the rain or mist. In others, trees stand dark and animated against the subtly dramatic scenes.

Living and working in Vienna, Smolski incorporates his fascination with the ever-changing quality of light into fantastic and even romantic landscapes. Each smooth transition in the paint draws the viewer further into the experience, inviting exploration. He has recently participated in the X Florence Biennale in 2015.

About the Exhibition

Landscapes of the Mind: A New World

Landscapes of the Mind, the new collective exhibition at Agora Gallery, highlights a select group of artists who have succeeded in presenting the natural beauty of the earth in a unique way. These six artists come from an astonishing geographic range - from Australia to Puerto Rico to Germany - and between them represent the earth, sea, and sky. There are dazzlingly detailed oil paintings of water flowing that completely engulf the viewer in the moment. There are birds in flight rendered as impressionistic dabs, simply color and movement and nothing else. There are images captured by camera that reach beyond travel photography to find precious, specific, hold-your-breath moments when the sun is at its most thrilling. You will also find nature as told by its animals: close-up paintings of bears, zebras, and lions, as thoughtful and probing as any human's portrait. This exhibition proves that there will always be something new to say about the wonders of the planet, as long as there are artists that pay attention.
