Then there are the two regular use credit cards. As mentioned above they are both powered by American Express. In order to qualify for them you need to pass two sets of criteria – one is Macy’s own basic spending guidelines and the other is American Express’ creditworthiness criteria.

Macy’s spending guidelines is dependent on your annual spending at Macy’s using their in-store credit card. In order to qualify for the basic American Express credit card you need to spend up to $999 annually. For the Preferred American Express credit card the amount is $1,000 and higher.

Both of them give you rewards and card holder discounts that non-card holders will have access to. They are even better than the in-store credit cards in this regard. The basic American Express gets special savings offers through Macy’s Star Rewards program, a daily wish from American Express which brings you handpicked products as much as 50% and emergency referral services when travelling. They also get monthly card holder savings and easy return policies with no receipt. The Macy’s Preferred American Express credit card has all the same benefits as the basic card with the addition of the unlimited $25 star rewards certificates and Macy’s preferred travel service.

The $25 star rewards certificates are Macy’s version of the cash back bonus rewards. When you purchase something using the Preferred American Express credit card every dollar you spent earns 3% for all purchases in-store and 1% for all other purchases. Once your earnings hit the $25 threshold, a rewards certificate automatically get sent through mail. You can use these good as cash to purchase merchandise in-store.
