Contents of a thali

A thali contains many Indian dishes and desserts. It has all the items you require to make a complete meal. Usually items of a thali vary from state to state in India as there is a diversity of food traditions in India. But on the whole a typical Indian thali consists of some common elements these are roti, vegetable, papad, curd, dhal, rice etc. A typical south Indian thali has a lot of elements, mostly made up of rice like the dahi vada, idli, sambhar, uttapam. Roti, sambhar, uttapam, coconut curry, dry vegetable curry, cooked yogurt curry, chutney are the main items in a south Indian thali. Now a north Indian thali unlike the south Indian thali doesn’t have much items made of rice. A north Indian thali consists of chapati, rice, vegetable curry, dry vegetable curry mostly made of potato, papad, salad, pickle, ghee etc. In terms of desserts Indian thalis have their own varieties like the gulab jamun, barfi etc.

Punjabi thali – a Punjabi thali consists of a paratha, a couple of vegetable curry’s (one of them being paneer), biryani, curd, a dessert, pickle and salad.

Bengali meal – a Bengali meal is pretty much different from Punjabi thali, it has rice, dal, a typical kadhi, a dry curry, pickle and salads and for the deserts Bengal special sweet, roshogulla.

A Gujarati thali – a Gujarati thali consist a lot of elements as compared to any other in India. Khaman dhokla, daal paratha, chakli, creamy milk, chapatti, and desserts of various types like the kheer, gulab jamun etc.

These are the main types of thali’s available in the Indian thali menu, rest others are with little modification of these three and the south Indian thali.

An Indian thali as mentioned earlier is a full day meal, and so is very rich in terms of calories. An average Indian thali contains all types of vitamins, minerals, roughage, fats and in total around 1200-1800 kilo calories.

Punjabi thali- 1600 kcal

Bengali thali- 1450 kcal

Gujarati meal- 1350 kcal

South Indian thali- 1450 kcal
