Chicago, Illinois; September 6, 2006.  Consumer Lab, an independent testing organization has evaluated 7 popular diet supplements and has rated 42% or 3 of the most popular brands “Not Approved”.

The study considered three factors - the amount of key or active ingredient contained, contamination levels and ability to break apart, and gave thumbs down to some of the most heavily advertised products on the market.

Those that received a “Not Approved” review are EZ-Trim, TRIMSPA X3 Original Formula and Life Extension Chromium 200.

Among the reasons for test failure:

  • Less-than-stated levels of the active ingredient chromium (some had as little as 25% of the stated chromium content)
  • Excessive amounts of chromium and caffeine (one had over 40% more chromium than stated on packaging)
  • Existence of potential carcinogen and toxins

Consumer Lab (www.consumerlab.com) whose stated mission is ‘To identify the best quality health and nutrition products through independent testing,’ noted the following:

“Chromium is an essential trace mineral, meaning that your body needs small amounts of it.  Chromium is important for insulin function.

It is important to know that the product contains the ingredients that it claims.

Too little and one may not get the expected effect and waste money. Too much, and you may experience negative effects.

Consumer Lab noted that while chromium is available naturally in normal diets (good food sources include cheese, prunes, asparagus, mushrooms, beer, wine), therapeutic levels of chromium require supplementation.
