When ordering, keep an eye out for the ingredients or the way the food is cooked as described in the menu. Foods that are fried, breaded, batter-dipped, creamy, or scalloped are most likely high in calories, unhealthy fat and sodium content. Stay away from those as much as possible.

 

Avoid buffets, even if they offer salad bars. Eating-all-you-can is the logic behind it and you’re bound to overeat, especially when you want to make the most out of what you paid for. If you really must, try to opt for healthier options of meat, fruit and vegetables.

 

Do mind the portions of your food. As much as possible, avoid upsizing meals at when dining out. Regular portions alone are usually already more than your recommended calorie intake. At restaurants, dishes are usually good for two; you can split a dish with someone or consume half then bring the other half home.

 

Whenever possible, try to “special” order your food. Ask if you could substitute steamed food for fried ones, separate or put sauces and dressings “on the side” or to “hold the mayonnaise” or other fatty flavorings.

 

As tempting as sodas, alcoholic beverages and fruit juices are, always stick with water to accompany your meals. This lessens the consumption of any other hidden calories and high sugar levels. If you find water to be a bit too blah, try adding a bit of lemon or lime to the water. You can also order unsweetened ice tea or fruit juices.
