Plastic Surgeon Is A Great Career

A career in the medical field can offer you an opportunity to provide the world with much needed care while also earning yourself a wage that is comfortable. For those with a passion for science and also a passion for art and beauty, plastic surgery can be an ideal path. It requires the same intense and extensive schooling as any other doctor would undergo, but in the end one gets to combine the specialized training they have received with aesthetic and artistic skills. Before deciding to take this path, it is necessary to put some real thought into it. This is not a calling to be taken lightly and will require a serious time commitment.

As a student, the younger you are when you decide to pursue the goal of becoming a plastic surgeon, the better. If you are still in high school and feel this is your calling there are many things you can begin to do to increase your chances of succeeding in pursuing a career in the medical field. Begin by taking all of the science courses offered by your institution. Also, begin looking into volunteering at a hospital or clinic. This volunteer experience will show that you have an interest in healthcare and also for the care and comfort of patients. The more exposure that you have early on the better your chances will be down the line.

While in your senior year of high school you should begin applying to colleges and universities. If you had high grades and completed a strong program you will likely have your pick of institutions and majors. You may choose to major in a scientific field but that is not strictly necessary. Many medical schools are accepting an increasing number of students from the liberal arts to broaden the base of people practicing medicine. Regardless of what your primary course of study is you will need to complete all of the prerequisite courses. That means chemistry, biology, physics, and any other science courses you can take will strengthen your application. Be sure to speak with a counselor about your goal to become a plastic surgeon. They will be able to offer advice and help you outline a curriculum that will fulfill your needs. In your final year of university you will then begin applying to the institutions you would like to attend for your advanced degree.

During your actual medical studies you will spend your first several years studying general care. During this period you will not be able to express your desire to become a plastic surgeon. Instead you will learn all of the fields and will gain a broad knowledge base. Finally, upon completing these courses it will be time to become a plastic surgeon resident. This will be the period of time that you specialize before finally becoming a full-fledged doctor.
Pursuing a degree and a career in cosmetic surgery will take many years and require dedication. It is not for everyone but for those who are committed and passionate it can be a lifelong calling that is very fulfilling.
