How do you stain a fiberglass door? Read and find out.
Staining a fiberglass door can be a lot of work, but it is highly accomplishable with a little time well spent and an understanding of how it is to be accomplished. It just requires the knowledge of how to do it, and what you need to accomplish such a task. The good news is that staining fiberglass is a little easier than straining wood, but does need a different type of stain to get the task done. You will need to purchase a stain called gel stain, because the other types of stains do not seem to stick like gel stain. You can buy a multitude of different color stains when deciding to stain your fiberglass door.
The first thing you need to do is remove the door knob and other hardware from the door, such as the dead bolt and lock. You will also need to scrape off all the excess window glazing you got when you bought the door with a razor blade. You will then need to take a rag with soap and water to clean any fingerprints or grime, and then take a mineral spirit cleaning formula you can buy at most hardware stores, and a rag and begin cleaning and preparing it for the staining. Do not ever sand a fiber based door, it will ruin it. You will then need to take a fine bristled brush and begin staining your door, while using a clean rag to damp the heavy areas of stain. After you finish the staining process of the door, you will need to apply a top coat, which is a second or third layer to be applied to your door for a more finished look. This can be done by using a spraying machine or a brush. I recommend a spaying machine because it is a lot quicker, but a brush will do just fine too. Make sure you allow each coat to dry before applying additional coats to your door. Then you are finished, that is all there is to it!
