Google has recently updated their search algorithm and the latest update has increased the value of having a Blog on your web site. Basically what Google has done is to increase the importance of new and fresh content in their placement scheme. So if your site has newer content than a similar site it should get a boost above that similar site in Google's search listings.

For many sites this will be a non-issue,The New Importance of Blogs for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Google Articles a good example is a news site, they are constantly filling their site with new information and articles. But for other sites this can be a big issue. If you are a small business and you are running a small store site then you may not update your site very often, usually only as you add new products or have special promotions. This may not be frequently enough to keep your position ahead of the competition on Google. If your site is promoting or selling a single item, like an eBook, you may not be updating the site at all after you initially set it up.

Here is where having a Blog comes in handy. If you have a Blog you can easily create new content for your web site and with the right programming have it show up on the home page, or other page you are promoting in Google. You don't need a lot of new content and it does not have to be very involved, just something that relates to your site's main content. You really only need a paragraph or two on a regular basis.

What do you write about? Well one store site I know of puts up a few different items on sale each week, only 4-5 items, and then puts those sale items in their Blog listing. They simply change those few sale items each week, but this gives them new content on the site weekly.

If you have a single product site, like an eBook promotional site, then maybe you write up 12 different short articles or Blog entries (again, these only need to be one or two paragraphs) and then put these up onto your web site Blog once a month. A good approach is to find something that relates to your eBook that you could  talk about on a monthly basis.

An example here is my wife, who is an author of fiction short stories and novels. She has an eBook containing 4 spooky ghost short stories and a web site with an attached Blog. Since the short stories are fiction it is hard to write any additional content to go along with those stories, so she has decided to write up a few very short Blog entries talking about some of the haunted locations she has visited that inspired some of her writing. Clearly related to her writing and ghost stories, and easy to do since she is only planning 3-4 paragraphs on each (much shorter than this article). These quick articles will be placed on her Blog throughout the coming year to keep her site current in Google's eyes.

So, Google likes fresh content and a Blog is an easy way to take care of that. You could just put up a couple of new paragraphs every month or so on your home page, but a Blog is so much easier. Then all you need to do is to have that Blog on your site (most Blogging software has this ability), then have the most current post displayed or copied to your home page.

And don't forget the other nice features of Blogs aside from their ease of use, for instance they organize and index your Blog posts which adds to the usefulness and value of your site to your visitors.
