We all know there are countless things in life that we can't avoid. Obviously people get sick and die and there is little that we can do to stop that. We can attempt to take better care of ourselves but there is no assurance that we will live forever. There are,
however, some things that we can do to help avoid putting ourselves or others in harms way.
Quite a few people die each year at the hand of themselves or others. They don't really plan to hurt or kill anybody and many of their victims are completely innocent when their lives are snuffed out. These people aren't making use of a gun or a knife to hurt others but they are using a weapon, their vehicle.
It used to be that most people who were killed in automobile accidents were killed because of drinking and driving. As time has gone on, and thanks to a number of non-profit organizations such as MADD, SADD, and even AA, many more people have become aware of this issue and the way in which it can be avoided. Over time this has made a significant impact on the number of people killed each year in DUI cases and has created a decline in not only the number of accidents that occur but also in the number of injuries and deaths. And in addition the new tougher laws have also made even first time offenders accountable for their actions which means they are less likely to have these issues arise down the road.
The drop of DUI cases is significant but unfortunately not fully celebrated because a new driving hazard has been coming on the scene. It is the situation regarding distracted driving and can include anything but mostly relates to the usage of cell phones to call or text while driving. The instance of injuries, deaths, and accidents on account of distracted driving is on the rise and authorities are trying to find a good way to enforce the rules when it comes to driving while using one of these instruments.
Numerous states have laws about texting and driving, hands free phone usage while driving, and so forth, but authorities are still finding it tough to catch those who are driving while distracted if they are not driving erratically. Over time authorities hope that with an increased awareness that all people will pull over when working with their cell phones, however it will take some heavy duty education and law enforcement to get this problem in order.
