The Labret: A Unique Piercing

This is a unique piercing that is found in the center of the bottom lip most commonly. What most people don’t know is that a labret piercing can actually be found anywhere on the facial lip, though the center of the bottom lip is the most common placement. The labret is also known as a tongue pillar. While many people consider this piercing a modern piercing, it was actually practiced by the Aztecs and the Mayans and was a piercing that was seen in those who were in the higher class system.

There are actually several different types of labret piercings for one to choose from. This is a piece of jewelry that looks very much like a barbell, but it has a plate on one end, the end that is in the mouth, that will keep the piercing from irritating the gums or the teeth. While you can wear a regular barbell in the labret piercing, it is better to stick with the ones that are meant for the labret piercing to avoid irritation of the gums or the teeth.

While it might seem limiting that the labret stud is the only jewelry that can be safely worn in the labret piercing, you’ll be excited to see that they come in many different shapes and sizes. Different colors, materials, and even logos and gemstones have been incorporated into the labret stud so that everyone will find what they are looking for. There are so many different options to choose from that the most difficult part may be choosing just one labret stud for your piercing.
