When it comes to the quality of your household water, one of the main factors that determines whether your water is “soft” or “hard” is the types of minerals contained within your water. When water is referred to as being “hard,” it means that it contains more minerals than that of ordinary water.

These minerals are calcium and magnesium ions. When these minerals dissolve,What Is A Water Softener and Why Do You Need One? Articles it results in other minerals dissolving less easily. “Soft” water, on the other hand, is water that has been removed of these ions that make the water hard and replaced with other ions, such as sodium or potassium.

The minerals that determine how “hard” or “soft” your water is will be dependent on where you are getting your water from. For example, if you are getting your water from a well, then your water is more likely to contain more “hard” minerals like calcium and magnesium. This is because, as water travels through the ground, it is dissolving rocks, like limestone, or metals whose remnants continue to travel with the water. The presence of these minerals in your water can not only affect your skin, but it can also affect your pipes. “Hard” water makes it difficult for soap to dissolve which can leave residue on the skin and hair causing buildup, dryness, and irritation. Your pipes, on the other hand, could become clogged because of this buildup of soap scum and lime deposits which could lead to a lower life span of household appliances that use water.

By investing in and using a water softener, you can increase the lifespan of your household machines and pipes by preventing scale buildup and increasing the lathering of soaps to prevent soap scum. In order to begin the softening process, a water softener will begin a process called ‘ion exchange’ in order to remove these “hard” ions, like calcium and magnesium, and replace them with sodium or potassium ions. This ‘ion exchange’ occurs by using certain negatively charged salts within the water softener to attract the stronger charged positive ions such as calcium and magnesium and releasing the weaker charged positive ions like sodium and potassium. This softer water is then transferred through your pipes to deliver fresh, cleaner, softer water that will be easier on your pipes and appliances.

Once this ‘ion exchange’ occurs, trapping the hard minerals and releasing softer ones, the water softener will begin a process of regeneration in order to continue softening your water. Along with every water softener comes a brine tank that is filled with softener salts to complete the regeneration process. During this process, along with being cleaned and disinfected, the water softener will take the brine solution from the brine tank and move it into the softener tank starting another ion exchange process, but in reverse. This process will wash the salt in the water softener releasing the hard minerals that were caught, replacing them with sodium ions, and flushing them out of the system.

Water softeners are not only beneficial to use at home, but they are extremely helpful when on the road. If you are an avid traveler or camper, chances are you might own an RV.
