Winter is an easy time to get discouraged, especially if you live in a state that has a real winter with cold and snow. You get tired of sitting in the house and even more tired of freezing every time you step out the door. On top of that, it is another snow day and the kids are home yet again. It's easy to sink in to the TV-induced hypnoses just to avoid thinking about the whole thing.

It's easy to sink in to the TV-induced hypnoses just to avoid thinking about the whole thing.

Then you look at your email and someone sends you a quote. "The last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." Viktor Frankl (1905'1997), Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist. A little more research and you find that Viktor Frankl was not only a neurologist and psychiatrist, but also a holocaust survivor.

His work focused on the fact that "even in the most absurd, painful and dehumanized situation, life has potential meaning and that therefore even suffering is meaningful. Suddenly the fact that it is winter seems pretty insignificant and complaining about it seems even worse.

Your outlook and attitude affect your ability to function; there is no doubt about that. If you don't like what you are doing and you start to develop a negative attitude about what you are doing, you are simply not going to be effective. Then you have to look at why you have this attitude. Is it really something you don't like doing or just something you don't feel like doing? If it is truly making you unhappy, then maybe it is time to do something else. If it is something you just don't feel like doing, maybe you be looking at why you don't like doing it.

Are you good at it, even though you don't like doing it? Are you picking bad times to try to work? Are you not experiencing the success you wanted, so you are becoming discouraged and want to give up? Are other things interfering like feeling guilty about something else you should be doing or spending time with your kids? Or is really just that you need an attitude adjustment?

Remember, you are the only one that can control your attitude. You can change your attitude. How you look at things can have an effect on every part of your life, so make sure you are going about your day with the right attitude.
