In Autumn of 2010, Nintendo released a worldwide patch for DSi and DSi XL handheld consoles that caused most to all DS flash cards to stop functioning. Called the 1.4.1U in the US, 1.4.1E in Europe and 1.4.2C in Asia, manufacturers have been working hard to find workarounds since its release. The Acekard 2i card has now such a workaround.

Nintendo recently released what is known in the US and Europe as the 1.4.1 update. It is an update appended to the back-end system settings of the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL consoles that,New Nintendo 1.4.1 Patch Fixed for Acekard 2i DSi Cards Articles according to Nintendo, "enhances system performance" of the consoles. Unfortunately, there has been no evidence of this to date and the patch appears to simply attempt to block DS flash cards, on which the homebrew scene of the Nintendo DS console is based.

The patch is known by several names. In the United States it is known as the 1.4.1U patch, in Europe as the 1.4.1E patch, and in China and some other parts of Asia the 1.4.2C patch. The content of the patch, insofar that there is no visible difference to the DSi console other than incompatibility with my DS flash cards, is identical regardless of region.

The Acekard 2i team are the first to announce compatibility with the newest patch, however! A file available to download for free from the Acekard website enables users to put a file on their Micro-SD card and select a file inside the Acekard 2i user interface that will 'flash' their card to be compatible. However, this carries a very small risk of damaging the Acekard 2i and the DSi console must never be switched off during the flashing process or damage could occur. An un-updated DSi or a DS Lite console is also required to flash the card, which is not always conveniently on hand. It is best to buy your Acekard 2i from a store that is guaranteed to flash your card for you beforehand to avoid any risk and also the technical knowledge required to flash the card.
