Serious photographers do not consider an option the use of any point and shoot camera, because they are good only for snapshots. However, these cameras can still be used as excellent tools.
Obviously, you will take better pictures with a digital SLR, but good photos can also be taken with any point and shoot camera. You have decent over how the picture will look like if the camera has manual shooting mode, shutter priority or aperture priority. Good results can still be obtained even in the lack of any custom shooting modes.
Point and shoot cameras do have a couple of advantages over digital SLRs, including reduces weight and size, as they easily fit almost any pocket.
Your point and shoot camera can be used as a convenient sketchbook. Let me explain what I mean by that.
As you already know, a small camera that can be easily carried in one of your pockets can be with you almost all the time. If you notice something that has the potential of a great photo, but your digital SLR is not with you, just use your point and shoot. Use the photo as a sketch for future photo sessions, as a reference and as a record of the given subject. At later time, you can return to the scene with the DSLR to take the photo as you imagined to.
It is extremely relaxing to use the camera in this way. With a DSLR you worry about the exposure and a number of other things, while with a point and shoot, you simply select the auto mode and take the photo.
Later, you can review the photos you have taken and decide which one of them worth to be taken again with the DSLR. Basically, the photos taken with the point and shoot camera are sketches that need some fine tuning with the digital SLR. Artists use a sketchbook in a very similar way.
Take numerous different photos of the site of your future photo session. Frame the subject slightly different with each photo. Look at the photos at a later time to find to best composition. Decide upon the best shoot angle, most suitable lens and the best time of the day to take the photo. All these decisions can be made by looking at the point and shoot photos you have previously taken, saving you a lot of time and effort.
So, go out there with any point and shoot camera or cell phone and start experimenting with different angles and frames. You can do whatever you want to, as they are only sketches.
