Coonoor is the first of the series of the three hill stations around here. The Nilgiri Hills are famous for its majestic hill stations. Coonoor is located at an average altitude of 1,800 m above the sea level and it is only 19 km from Ooty. Coonoor is famous for its green environment and for the rich variety of flora and fauna. It offers a perfect setting for hiking and trekking. This hill town is also famous for tea plantation. Coonoor is an ideal place for a leisure trip with family and friends.

It is about 1000 feet above the sea level and a spectacular spot to enjoy. Ravines are there on both the sides of this huge rock formation. The tip of the peak is like a dolphin’s nose. Dolphin viewpoint provides a wonderful view of the famous Catherine Falls which is a double-cascaded waterfall. Geddhehaada was the native of Catherine Falls.

Due to high altitude, Coonoor is a subtropical highland climate area and so it enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. In the summer also, trekking and sightseeing is not difficult. Every year a bulk of tourists travel to Coonoor and Ooty. Summer is the best time to visit Coonoor, however, few backpackers visit in winters. There are enough hotels in Coonoor with rates from which the visitors can choose according to their preference.


Bus services are really good in Coonoor. Both, state-owned and numerous private buses operate from Ooty, Mysore, Coimbatore, Bangalore and etc. NH 67 connects Coonoor and it is one of the main access route for the entire district. Mettupalayam is the nearest rail station, which is 46 km away. UNESCO declared the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as a World Heritage Site. A ride in the toy train from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is a great experience. The toy train ride offers a panoramic view of the Nilgiri. The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport which is connected by regular flights with other major cities of the country.
