The Journey of a Travel Writer

Norm Goldman: Welcome,Nautical Narratives: A Conversation with Janet Groene, Travel Author Extraordinaire Articles Janet! It's a pleasure to have you with us. Could you share a bit about your background, the books you've written, and what drives you to pen travel literature?

Janet Groene: From a young age, I've had an affinity for words and the magic of crafting them into stories. Once I realized that my passion could also be a source of income, I was captivated. My husband's career as a pilot meant irregular hours, which led me to freelance writing to align with his schedule. Despite initial rejections, perseverance paid off, and I soon found success in selling my work. The lessons learned through these experiences were invaluable, teaching me more than any writing course ever could.

A Decade of Seafaring Life

Norm Goldman: You and your husband spent a remarkable ten years living on a 30-foot sailboat. What inspired this adventure, and did you ever grow weary of the seafaring lifestyle?

Janet Groene: The dream was sparked by the sight of a beached sailboat in the Bahamas, igniting our desire to live at sea, where we could be together constantly and still have a place to call home. The transition took careful planning, including selling our possessions and preparing for a future return to land-based life. However, as we adapted to life afloat, we found that freelance writing could sustain us. After a decade, we were ready for a new chapter, building a home in Florida, yet we still cherish the RV lifestyle.

Romantic Destinations Afloat

Norm Goldman: Among the many places you've visited, which would you consider the most romantic, and why?

Janet Groene: The Bahamas hold a special place in our hearts, with its uninhabited islands offering serene solitude. Other romantic locales include:

  • Graycliff in Nassau: A historic 400-year-old restaurant.
  • Useppa Island, Florida: Secluded and picturesque.
  • Tortola, British Virgin Islands: A tropical paradise.
  • St. Lucia: Anchored with a view of the majestic Pitons.
  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia: A snorkeler's dream.
  • Biscayne Bay, Miami: City lights reflecting on tranquil waters.
  • Antigua: Rich in maritime history.
  • Alaska: A wildlife wonderland in the chill of morning.
  • The Grenadines, Caribbean: A mosaic of exotic islands.

Discovering Sailing Sanctuaries

Norm Goldman: How can couples find the most intriguing and romantic sailing destinations?

Janet Groene: Sailing demands dedication, with the boat's needs taking precedence. The journey is shaped by natural elements and legal requirements, but each couple must pursue their unique dreams, whether that involves cultural immersion or natural exploration. Romance on the water can take many forms, from quiet beach walks to lively cultural experiences.

Unforeseen Challenges at Sea

Norm Goldman: What unique challenges or experiences did you encounter while living on your sailboat?

Janet Groene: A boat is only a home when it's in motion, and our life was a constant navigation of basic needs and environmental vigilance. The simplicity of life at sea brings its own set of challenges, from mail delivery to weather forecasting.

The RV Alternative

Norm Goldman: When not sailing, you lived in an RV. Where did you travel, and what obstacles did you face?

Janet Groene: RV life offers its own ease and challenges. While it's simpler to stop and rest on land, the solitude found at sea is unmatched. Safety concerns in "boondocking" contrast with the relative security of a marina berth.

Janet Groene: Travel is a continuous discovery of new horizons and deeper understandings of the world and its diverse cultures, inspired by my parents' own love for exploration.

The Reward of Travel Writing

Norm Goldman: What is the greatest reward of being a travel writer?

Janet Groene: The ability to transport readers to places they may only visit through my words, and the freedom of being my own boss, are the greatest rewards of this profession.

Norm Goldman: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Janet Groene: Travel doesn't inherently make one a great writer. Success in freelance writing, whether stationary or on the move, requires honing the craft and mastering self-marketing.
