Travel in Athens with kids. Greece is a lovely country and Athens is the perfect city destination for families! Athens offers everything you would hope for when it comes to travelling with children and this guide can help you plan your visits.

SYNTAGMA SQUARE AND THE HELLENIC

Every Sunday at Syntagma Square and the Parliament you can watch the ceremonial and grand parade of the Evzones dressed in their traditional white kilts (or Foustanella). They march to the Hellenic Parliament with a marching band,Travel in Athens – Greece with kids Articles for the changing of the guards. The Evzones are members of the Presidential Guards. They stay completely still next to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier until the moment they can move for the change of the guards. 

The ceremonial starts at 11am. All roads are closed off and people fill the streets. It usually lasts about 30 minutes. You are allowed to pose next to them to take some photographs, but not too close.

THE NATIONAL GARDENS

After that you can enter the National Gardens for a picnic or for a coffee at the garden cafe. Kids will definitely love the duck pond, the small zoo with farm animals and the large playground near by.

PANATHENAIC STADIUM

Don’t forget to visit the Panathenaic Stadium or ”Kalimarmaro” (meaning good marble). It is the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble. This is where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896.

ACROPOLIS AND THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

Once you are in Athens you must visit the Acropolis as well as the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora that lies beneath.

The Acropolis Museum frequently organizes workshops for kids, that way children can have fun while learning about ancient Greece in a creative way.

If you are travelling in the summer bring lots of bottled water, sun hats and sunscreen! If you are travelling with a baby it is better to use a baby knapsack instead of a stroller. Don’t forget to keep your baby safe in the sun. Take your time during your visit, there is so much to see! 

LYCABETTUS HILL

Older kids and teenagers will enjoy a ride to the top of Lycabettus Hill. This is the highest point in Athens. You will have panoramic view of the city of Athens. At the top of the hill you will find the church of St. George and a cafe for breakfast and lunch. You can also make reservations for dinner. Ideal for watching the sunset!

ATHENS ZOOLOGICAL PARK

As many say, Athens Zoological Park is one of the best zoos in Europe where visitors can see a huge variety of animals such as lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, penguins, dolphins, birds and much more. So if you plan to travel in Athens with kids, don’t forget to visit the zoo.

The zoo is pretty far from the centre but it is worth adding to your travel plans. It will keep you and your kids occupied for the whole day.

SWIMMING

Akti Vouligmenis is one of the best equipped beaches that are easily reached from central Athens. A family friendly beach with tennis courts, beach volleyball, beach umbrellas and chairs, changing rooms.
