Corrosion is a process that converts the polished metals to highly stable oxides. It is the regular damage in the mechanical properties of the material (mainly metals) due to the chemical reaction with the environmental conditions. In other words,Factors Affecting The Corrosion Rate Articles Corrosion is the commonly used word which explain the electrochemical corrosion of metals when come in contact with an oxidant like oxygen.

There are four elements which are presented in the metals that leads to the occurrence of corrosion and considered as the corrosion cells. These cells are a cathode, an anode, and electrolyte and a metallic conductor. Change in the strength of the electrolyte directly affects the rate of corrosion. Change in the rate of the corrosion can be determined mainly by five major factors.

Oxygen

As water enhances the rate of corrosion, oxygen is equally responsible that increases the corrosion rate. Corrosion on a polished metal can occur when placed in the environment with oxygen deficiency. But the rate of occurrence of the corrosion and destruction of the substrate will be comparatively slower. In submerged conditions, if a metal substrate with presence of sufficient amount of oxygen, is placed in contact with an electrode, and then with other area of metal, the area with high oxygen concentration will be reactive to the remaining surface. This causes the formation of oxygen concentration cell, which result in the quick generation of corrosion.

Temperature

Corrosion is accelerated by the increase in the temperature because the reactions of corrosion are electrochemical in nature. Hence, this indicates that the rate of corrosion in a warmer environment will be more as compare to that of cooler environment.

Salt Environment

Salt Environment enhances the rate of corrosion on the metal substrates as the chemical salts improve the conductivity of the electrolyte. The most common salt that generates corrosion on the metal substrates is sodium chloride. It is a foremost component of seawater. This chemical usually extracts the moisture from the air and elevates the rate of corrosion on the metal substrates.

Humidity

Humidity plays a significant role in promoting the rate of corrosion on the substrates. The longer will be the time of exposure of the product in moisture, more will be the effect of corrosion on the products.

Pollutants

Chemicals produced by production units and manufacturing plants is considered as the Pollutants and chlorides (that are usually found in coastal areas) generated corrosion. Acidic components like carbon dioxide directly contact with the metal and enhances the rate of corrosion.

The manufacturers must test the effect of factors that generates corrosion on the metal substrates. The best way to test the corrosion resistance of products is Salt Spray Chamber.  The testing instrument is widely used to create various environmental factors to judge the effect corrosion on the products. The instrument offers highly accurate and stable test results. The test machine strictly adheres to various national and international standards.
