I’m not quite sure if it fits into this category,The Ultimate Fabric- Leather Articles because for me it is not just a fabric leather is more of a symbol. In most cases you can see metals and rockers wearing leather jackets, because this is the strongest, most durable and insulating fabric. From the movies the good characters looked just awesome wearing leather jackets and we associate this fabric with sexy, style and danger. That is why so many people admire it and want to have either a clothing, bag, shoes or a piece of furniture.

Faux Or Genuine Leather?

And I’m not talking about faux leather, it is like drinking a diet cola or no sugar gum, you get the point. Keep in mind though that faux leather is affordable while the genuine high quality one is not for everyone. Therefore when it comes to upholstering it is probably a better idea to purchase faux leather. In fact when I think twice about it is not so bad after all, it is quite durable and the cleaning is really easy, all you need are wet wipes.

Moreover you don’t need to condition faux leather because it has a protective coating, it is literally stain and water resistant. This doesn’t mean you have to neglect the maintenance and think it will last. You’ll have to wipe the dust every week and clean the hard to reach places, because when dust and dirt start to build up they act like little saws and can shorten the life of your sofa.

However you can’t compare the smell and touch of leather with anything else and having a sofa upholstered with genuine leather is really great, trust me. But don’t make the mistake of purchasing a suede couch because this fabric is very demanding, hard to clean and maintain. Moreover it is moisture sensitive so you’ll need to hire professional cleaning technicians if a stain occurs and it will believe me.

If you decide to invest in a high quality genuine leather, you won’t have trouble with the maintenance and cleaning. You’ll have to keep it out of direct sunlight and condition it twice a year, but the same cleaning technique is used as with the faux leather. The full grain leather is also stain and water resistant, but I recommend you use saddle soap to remove stains, it will be very effective and not expensive at all.

If you take good care for the leather sofa, you can rest easy that it will outlive you because as I said before this is the most durable fabric. It can withstand extreme temperature amplitudes and high traffic without wearing and tearing.
