Auto Repair Tools - What are the Essentials?

General auto repair and maintenance doesn’t necessarily mean an extravagant investment in tools and time. There are a variety of principles people can use to choose tools based on comfort level, skill and ability. A basic tool set can set can easily serve in getting you out of a jam while also saving you a bit of cash in the long run. In this article, we will outline a few essential auto repair tools. 

Basic Tools
Each kit should begin and end with a pair of screwdrivers, a file, adjustable wrench, hammer and a full wrench set. A canvas bag or toolbox will help you keep everything neat and organized. With these basic tools, you will be prepared for emergency and routine repairs. You can also provide a service to other drivers in need. 

Screwdrivers
Two common screwdrivers are flat and Phillips-head. Of course, there are a variety of different types, including hex and torx, that may also come in handy at one point or another depending on the application, but in general, you should be able to tackle the majority of your auto repair work with the first two. Some DIY mechanics will suggest an investment into a screwdriver kit complete with a variety of removable bits. Adjustable Wrench
A quality crescent or adjustable wrench is a very handy tool indeed! Odd and irregular spaces may not prove suitable for other types of tools. File
Generally between 6 and 12 inches, a file can be useful when fixing small electrical issues, scaling off corroded parts, cleaning rust or balancing out uneven wear areas. These tools can easily become dirty after only minor usage, and as such, regular cleaning is highly recommended. Be aware that files can do a bit of damage to softer materials that remain unprotected, including rubbers and plastics. With this in mind, you should take care when using this handy tool. 

Hammer
Quality hammers and mallets can be used to straighten out body dents from the inside, out. When used with a wrench, mechanics can work to loosen tight nuts as well. The back, or claw end of the hammer can serve as a pry bar when used parts that are close together. Additionally, a solid rubber mallet can aid in part installations without fear of damaging other parts that could be harmed when using a metal hammer. If you have the cash, consider investing in one of each. 

Wrenches
A complete set of combination wrenches in imperial and metric units together with an adjustable wrench can work to loosen tighter bolts. Additionally, these two tools can be used to loosen locknuts from one another during installation or removal.
