Car repair is one of the main responsibilities of individuals who own vehicles. Many vehicle owners may prefer to send their automobiles to garages that service their cars instead of doing minor repairs on them. This is very common for most owners, but there are some things that they should keep in mind when they bring their automobiles in. It is a good idea to have some notion about what may be wrong or where the strange noise may be coming from when it is brought to the service garage.

Visual Check-Up

People who own vehicles send them in for repair when they sense that something is wrong. Most of the time, owners hear strange noises or feel something wrong when they are driving the vehicle. A grinding sensation may be felt when shifting gears, for example, or a “clunking” noise is heard when the brake is applied. Before even bringing it in to be checked, the owner can benefit by just having a look see around the engine and around the entire automobile.

Things to Look Out For

Fresh grease or oil that seems to be coming out and dripping may be the cause of whatever the driver may be feeling is wrong. Check the parking space of the vehicle to see if there have been recent drops of oil. This will give the driver a very rough estimate of how long the oil has been dripping. This is the time to bring it in for car repair service. Our ears can also help in the maintenance of the automobile. Unusual noises coming from the engine or the body can be an indicator that something is wrong with it. It is wise to try and pinpoint where the noise may be coming from and try to look in that area of the automobile when it is parked. When checking the engine, wait for it to cool down before tinkering around it. An engine which is still hot from use can cause a serious burn upon contact with skin. It is not a good idea for anyone besides a qualified mechanic to look around the engine when the vehicle is idling.

The dials on the dashboard can also be a good indicator that something is wrong. It is advisable to always keep an eye on the gauges, dials and meters that are on the dashboard. The engine may be overheating if the gauge more than halfway up to “hot” or alarmingly near to the red zone. The gauge that indicates the RPM (or revolutions per minute) should also be taken note of. A very high RPM when the car is idle can signal something wrong with the engine.

The air conditioning or the heater may also need some car repair service when it malfunctions. This malfunction is a matter of immediate comfort, which is a priority for most people; it is important to get these issues taken care of as soon as possible. This is difficult to “do-it-yourself,” so owners are advised to bring the automobile in for servicing.
