The General Motors Foundation is making yet another donation, this time to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The donation is for four hundred thousand dollars.
The General Motors Foundation is a charity funding organization founded by General Motors in 1976. The foundation has provided funding for dozens of charities since its inception, including the “Safe Kids Buckle Up” program from Safe Kids USA and the recently ended Monday Night Football Tour which included employing football stars as volunteers to build playgrounds for schools nationwide. And the General Motors Foundation is making yet another donation, this time to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The donation is for four hundred thousand dollars. This donation will mark the donation of nearly six million dollars in support given to the Institute over the course of the last fifteen years.
In addition to the GM Foundation giving their support to the Cancer Institute, the GM Senior Vice President of Global Product Development Mary Barra and her husband are invited to chair the Institute’s thirtieth annual dinner on April twenty eighth. They are the second GM Foundation representatives to ever chair the event, following Dan Akerson, Chairman and CEO, and his wife from 2011 when over eight thousand dollars was raised for cancer research.
Mary Barra is in charge of the design, engineering, and quality of new vehicles across the globe. Her service to General Motors has been recognized by Forbes magazine, which recently named her one of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.”
“We’re very happy to have the support of Mary and Tony Barra as chairs of this year’s dinner to support cancer research,” said Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D. president and chief executive officer, Karmanos Cancer Institute. “We’re incredibly grateful for the unprecedented commitment from GM and the GM Foundation. Thanks to all of our supporters, we are developing the next standard of cancer care that will be used around the world.”
The General Motors Foundation focuses on a lot of different charity projects, but mostly focuses on four key areas of charity for their donations. Health and human services is just one of those areas.
“The GM Foundation’s grant will help Karmanos continue the important fight against cancer,” said foundation President Vivian Pickard. “We are fortunate to have this leading organization serving our Michigan communities and we are committed to making this year’s annual dinner a success.”
The dinner will be held at the GM Technical Center located in Warren, Michigan. General Motors is the Host Sponsor for this year’s dinner, which means they are one of the Institute’s sponsors and are the sponsor which has been chosen to host the dinner. The other sponsors being highlighted by the dinner for their contributions include the Compuware Corporation, Johnson Controls, and Lil and Alex Erdeljan.
Barra and her husband Tony are very pleased with the honor of hosting the dinner. “Tony and I are honored to be able to build upon the success of last year’s event by chairing the 2012 Annual Dinner,” said Barra. “The opportunity to serve an organization that is dedicated to eradicating cancer is a special privilege for us.”
