You need to note that some cars would have to be turned on and kept running so that the 12v power supply works. So in case you plug in your phone and it is still not charging, then you can try turning on the engine.

Basically a car power adapter is the same as a wall charger that you tend to plug into any electrical outlet of your house. Both are chargers that are able to conduct electricity from a source and transmit it in order to power your cell phone by charging the battery. The only difference between these two is that the wall charger will draw power from the source that supplies your house with electricity while your car adapter, once plugged in, will draw its power from the battery of the car and transmit this power to the battery of your phone.
