Even though entrepreneurs are normally optimistic, it is hard to stay upbeat with talk of recession and economic malaise.

There’s a lot of it going around – fear,Let Go of “Generic Fear” Articles that is.

Entrepreneurs are known for being optimistic, of seeing opportunities where others see disaster. But lately, what with talk of recession and economic malaise, some days it’s hard for an entrepreneur to stay upbeat.

Uneasiness, anxiety or even raw fear can creep in when we are surrounded by gloom. In that environment, if we happen to have a bit of a cash crunch, or a lull in new clients, we may wonder if our natural optimism is a delusion.

The energy of fear

Recently someone said, “It’s almost like the anxiety has a life of its own.”

You know what? It does. It’s just “generic fear.”

It’s true that external things can trigger fear. And most of us have had experiences in our personal or business lives that left us wary of certain circumstances. When we see similar circumstances now, our adrenaline pumps up to be ready for fight, flight or freeze – even if there is no immediate danger.

But fear also lives simply as a form of energy.

In a climate of fear such as is currently circulating in North America, some or maybe most of what we feel is just generic fear – the energy of fear. If you are like me, you can usually think of something to be anxious about. But it may be that the fear energy is actually what you are feeling. Fear really does have a life of its own.

It feels real. Your body responds with adrenalin. You might experience rapid heartbeat and faster breathing. In my body, fear seems to live in my solar plexus. You may experience fear in some other part of your body. But the source of the fear feeling may be just the energy of fear.

Here are a few things I've found helpful.

Physical clearing

Pay attention to the physical symptoms of fear (anxiety knot, shallow fast breathing, rapid heartbeat, tight chest, choked off throat, etc.). Then playfully see if you can change any of the symptoms.

The easiest fear symptom to change is breathing. You can breathe more slowly and deeply, which gets more oxygen into your brain. You can consciously loosen muscles. After slow deep breathing and loosening muscles, your heartbeat will likely slow down.

The point is to disconnect your attention from the fear, and focus on something physical that you can change. That brings back a little sense of power, which in turn diminishes the fear feeling. (Remember, this is about dealing with the energy of fear.)

Energy clearing

When you have shifted the physical experience of fear energy, use energy clearing techniques. For example, imagine something that could symbolize the energy of fear:

* slimy icky gunk that oozes around and taints everything; or

* a monster rising up out of a black lagoon and towering over you.

Then imagine that the symbol of fear transforms into something beautiful and life-giving:

* the slimy icky gunk is magically transformed into pristine bright sparkles; or

* the monster turns into a playful kitten or a cuddly stuffed teddy bear.

If you transform the energy of fear in your imagination, that energy is transformed here in the third dimension. Trees anywhere on the planet help to clean the air of the whole planet -- the trees do not have to be right beside the smoke stack. Similarly, if you clear the energy of fear anywhere -- even in your imagination -- it helps to transform the energy of fear wherever it resides -- even in your solar plexus.

Thoughts

When you’ve cleared some physical symptoms of fear, think: “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” And then think, “If that happened, what are some things I could do to deal with that?” Facing any dreaded question head on tends to diminish fear. The nameless thing gets named and then you can deal with it.

Let it go – again

Fear does tend to come back – it’s a persistent kind of energy. But each time it comes back, it is weaker, and not so debilitating, and does not stay as long. Just let it go.

For solo entrepreneurs in particular, our energy, thoughts and mood are a big factor in the success of our business. Helping to clear “generic fear” will help us stay healthy, and keep manifesting success.
