Everywhere you look people are sporting labels. I see it on television royalty and in my neighborhood. Labels and brands are now the attraction themselves. They used to be on the inside of the back of shirts,
now they are done up on the front in sparkles and patchwork. It just goes to show that if you show that something has importance long enough other people will go along with it and follow suit.
It has gone down to the smaller business level now. And why not? If it works for the giant company's then it will work for the little guys. There are people out there that get tired of wearing the same old labels as everyone else. When they see a funky coffee-shop t-shirt, they are all over it because they know it is muck rarer and therefore cooler than something that everyone has.
If you are curious as to why a company would choose promotional advertising over other types of marketing, you have to think about how people are. People like things. Promotional stuff is primarily used to give to people. If it is sold then usually it's inexpensive and only to cover costs. A person will see an ad on TV and be unaffected. When you give them something useful they remember you.
You are probably taking part in promotional advertising without even trying. My closest grocery store gave out reusable bags, with their logo, for groceries one weekend. They have them for sale now, I was lucky enough to get them when they were just coming out. I use that bag all over the place, in many different stores. That is because I don't want to be a part of throwing any more plastic bags out in the world.
Whether its a key chain or a promotional bag, you too are part of the promo campaign of different places. Any place that gives you an item that makes sense to be used, will get used. You become a walking advertisement without even realizing it.
