Triac is a traditional and widely used dimming technology that can be compatible with not only conventional incandescent bulbs, high voltage AC input halogen lamps, but also the latest LED lights. A triac dimmer can also be used with a triac dimmable driver so that it can dim DC input low voltage lamps.

Generally a triac dimmer is designed with AC input and output and it adopts trailing edge dimming. For traditional incandescent,Triac Dimmer with Great Compatibility for Traditional and LED Bulbs Articles halogen lamps and dimmable AC LED lights, just connect the dimmer with them. IF you would like to dim a DC input light, a triac dimmable driver shall be placed between the dimmer and light. Please be sure that the lights you used support triac dimmer.

To operate the dimmer, a control unit is necessary. Push button switch and rotary knob are the most popular and reliable ones. They have to be wired to the input end of the dimmer which shall be connected to the incandescent, halogen or LED. These control units are limited in the designated area without flexibility for convenient control.

Using other types of control protocol to control a triac LED dimmer is a new trend that enables users to control with much more flexibility and simplicity. For example, RF/WiFi wireless control, DMX512 control and so forth. Traditional triac dimmers do not have these functions since they are not designed with these control interfaces. To control with RF/WiFi, the dimmer should have built-in RF interface which can receive radiofrequency signal and convert it to Triac, and so does DMX.

Using RF/WiFi, no wiring required between the control unit and dimmer. You can operate anywhere in your house and the signal transmission distance can be up to 30m. Various types of RF remotes are available in the market. The common one is handheld remote with keys, it is portable and you can use it anywhere in your house. It enables to switch on/off and adjust brightness by pushing keys. Another style is wall mounted touch panel that enables full touch control, and it is easy to be installed into existing wall boxes.

A triac dimmer with DMX512 interface receives DMX signal which enables users to control it with DMX master controllers.
