The Sony Ericsson Zylo is a compact new music orientated phone from the manufacturer, utilising walkman technology. Available in Black, Silver and Pink, this is a fashion statement in mobile phone form, aimed at style conscious music enthusiasts.

The unit measures 103x 52x 11.5mm making it an appealingly compact handset, which easily fits into the users pocket on the move, making it perfect for listening to music on the go. Its light weight also adds to its convenience, weighing in at just 115 grams.

The screen of the Zylo displays on screen imagery in a pixel layout of 240x320, which allows up to 256,000 colours to be displayed, making it perfect for viewing photos and video files. Whilst it does not offer touch screen navigation, there is a number of buttons located beneath the screen, making it easy to navigate the menus on the screen. When the phone is held in a users hands and tilted sideways, the contents of the screen flips to match the orientation of the phone, meaning the user interface as well as photos and video clips can be displayed and viewed in both portrait and landscape forms, thanks to a built in accelerometer sensor.

Music playback is one of the crowning features of the Sony Ericsson Zylo, thanks to the inclusion of the world famous Walkman branded music technology. The internal media player supports many different types of music and video file formats, so it is unlikely that a user will be unable to play a track which they have added to their music library. TrackID software allows users to identify any song which they may encounter during their day to day activities, simply by holding the phone near the speaker which the track they wish to identify is playing from. The software then accesses a huge database and finds the matching song and its artist, and displays it on the screen so the users can then buy or download the song and add it to their music collection. A comprehensive 260MB of internal storage is provided to allow users to store a large number of files such as music tracks, whilst a stereo FM radio player with RDS is provided for additional entertainment, as are a number of pre-installed and downloadable games, some of which are motion based, thanks to the accelerometer sensor.

As well as providing excellent hardware and software double up as an effective music and video player, the Sony Ericsson Zylo, we must remember is also a phone. It utilises class 10 versions of both GPRS and EDGE to provide access to cellular networks and allows speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps when surfing the web via 3G, thanks to its WAP 2.0/xHTML web browser.

A functional 3.15 MP digital camera is also built into the handset, which is perfect for taking spontaneous snapshots, and results in high quality digital photos thanks to its pixel resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. The camera can also shoot good quality video footage in VGA quality at a rate of 24 frames per second.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo offers everything you would expect from a Walkman phone, i.e. a number of impressive music features, but also offers options to surf the web and take photos, making it an all round appealing handset for the style conscious or tech-savvy user.
