Normally customers are willing to stay on the current version and pay for update project and annual contract with SAP at the time of good economy.  And in the time of recession companies are trying to sit over and do not pay for annual contracts.  SAP itself has to have reasonable cost for official support and one of the options is training its technicians to cover only couple of recent version.  At this time of March 2012 these are 8.82,SAP Business One 2007A or is it possible to train new users on outdated release? Articles 8.81 and 8.8.  However support should be available through partner channel.  We would like to talk a little bit about such popular topics as introducing new users into the system and functional training:

1. Regional and Nationwide Technical Support Call Center concept.  Large or Midsize consulting firm is better positioned in comparison to small local consulting organization to hire technical support department staffed with old-good-days professional.  Here they have to cover the whole region or often even USA and Canada nationwide to get reasonable workload.  Service is delivered via web sessions based on such technology as Citrix Gotomeeting or similar.  Here good question is ‘can we find local people?’  The answer is probably yes but one individual might not be familiar with every module and known issue.  In regional call center you can find more collective experience.  Folks here have also access to knowledge base even if you do not have active contract with SAP directly

2. User training.  There might be limitations to what you can do.  For example with annual contract you cannot add new user licenses.  But in the rest of training objectives web session works fine.  We believe that it is better if somebody who has long term experience be remote trainer versus somebody local who is willing to come through learning curve.  In the case of introducing large pool of new accountants of course consultant could be sent onsite.  But the situation is unlikely as if you are resuming growth better idea is come through reenrollment in support program via SAP and update your release to the current one

3. Technology Consulting.  Good recommendation here is stick to data repair and reporting.  We do not recommend such projects as upgrading Microsoft SQL Server to 2008 from 2005 or 2000 as your system might be not compatible.  There is also a dilemma on getting new License Server key as it is encoded against server hardware motherboard MAC number.  If you would like to undertake something technically challenging as programming in MS Visual Studio with code samples from SAP B1 Software Development Kit then we recommend consider version upgrade first

4. Do we still have the option to upgrade to 8.82 or whatever is current one?  Of course as technically it is not difficult.  But the problem is in rather your annual contract lapse and until you resolve it you will not have access to new version registration key
