This small to mid-market business Corporate ERP application seems to give stiff competition to traditional players in this software market such as Great Plains (especially with discontinuation of its Small Business Financials line), Solomon and probably Navision.

If you purchase Full Professional license,SAP Business One Getting Implemented in Rentals with Reasonable Customization Articles the user should have access to all the functionality in Business One, including Warranty Contract, which we would like to suggest you as the base for Rental Business specific processes.  Let’s come down to details:

1. Warranty Contract.  These are normally based on Customer, Item with Serial or Manufacturing number.  If you don’t want rental item to be written off from your Inventory GL account balance, consider such mechanism as Transfer Item to Technician, and when contract expires, Transfer from Technician.  When customer calls you for the service or regular maintenance, you may decide if this is covered by warranty or should be billable.  We described details of Transfer to and from technician in earlier publications

2. Custom Coding consideration and its scope.  If you would like to implement SB1 in Rental Business, you may expect some level of customization.  The good news is in SAP BO reasonable customization could be achievable via Settings.  You can add User Defined Fields to existing tables, such as Item Master, Business Partner and all the rest of them.  Plus you may create new User Defined tables with automatically created user access.  Of course in order to animate the new fields and have them participate in business logic you would need programming either in SDK or register external Object to do the job (good option to know about, but might be too revolutionary)

3. Some advantages of Business One, which you could never heard about.  These are its availability virtually worldwide, including such countries as China, Brazil, Russia, Korea, Japan.  You might consider spoke and hub Corporate ERP model, where your multinational corporation deploys something like Oracle Applications, Dynamics GP, SAP R/3, Axapta in the US Headquarters and in foreign subsidiaries you are running SAP B1.  Current version 8.81 allows you to seed all the company databases on one MS SQL 2008 Server, where Unicode collations are now supported for all the countries (prior the challenge was for hieroglyphs – for version 2007 and 2005, where A and B flavors were used to cover the issue).  Having this module implemented you are consolidating either on the level of GL Entries to be copied from SB1 subsidiaries into Corporate ERP GL (company should be created for the GL transactions importing only).  The second option is to consolidate Financial Statements only: Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss Statement, Cash Flow Statement (FRx, Microsoft Management Reporter or other tools)

4. Local, Nationwide and International Support and Implementation Options.  We are really looking for the customers who cannot get local partner with required expertise.  This is why we are featuring such services as SDK programming in C# or VB.Net, going onsite for challenging implementation, data conversion, upgrade.  If you are comfortable with such technologies as Web Sessions and Skype (or another type of VOIP) conferences, our services should be easy to accept by your accounting and IT people
