Atlantic City is a famous resort on the coast of New Jersey. Millions of people go there every year to enjoy swimming from the fine beach and for other amusements.
Atlantic City is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than the country around it, and draws many visitors from the cities of Philadelphia, 70 miles away, and New York, 130 miles away. Many national organizations have their conventions there in the big Convention Hall, which seats almost 50,000 people. In several piers built out over the water, there are theaters that offer a variety of shows.
A boardwalk stretches for over 7 miles along the beach, is 50 to 60 feet wide, and is lined with shops, restaurants, various amusements, and dozens of first-class hotels. One can be pushed down the boardwalk in picturesque rolling chairs, consisting of seats mounted on carriage wheels and wide enough for two or three persons. The sandy beach, known as Absecon Beach, is one of the finest in the world. In Atlantic City, "Miss America" is selected from beautiful young women representing all parts of the United States. In serving its many visitors, Atlantic City has become one of the biggest cities in New Jersey. The population in 1951 was 61,657.

Youth still peered out at me in spite of his crowning thatch of silvery hair when I first met John Burroughs in 1904. As we walked together on our way to his rustic little house in the woods called "Slab-sides,"
