There's a high demand for residents in Germany in almost all specialties. Being fluent in German is a must, especially in internal medicine. Most patients won't speak a single word of English (or any other foreign language) and all the paperwork will be in German.

The Goethe Institute is offering courses based on communication training. These courses are targeted for physicians,German Communication Training for Physicians at the Goethe Institute Articles doctors and clinical staff. If you are already working in Germany as a physician or want to start soon your residency at a German hospital, then the course is suitable for you. With this German course, you will be able to improve your communication skills and your intercultural competence in medical branch. You are going to learn technical terms from medicine and pharmacy, Also you will be taught about the German colloquial names of diseases and organs, different forms of clinical documentation and the right writing of medical reports. The Institute is going to train you with patient interviews that include medical history and examination situations. Other topics cover the German healthcare system, hospital structures, patient presentation, diagnostic apparatus, case presentations, the preparation and presentation of lectures, and creating an application.

• About two weeks, forty lessons, each with five lessons on four days per week.

The course will be given in the cities of Düsseldorf and Göttingen. The cost of these is around eight hundred euros including accommodation in double bed room. They are going to start on February, March and October. In the lesson times they are going to be focused on your needs. Seek advice of a Goethe Institute in your area. The course levels are based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Generally EU citizens, who have already completed their medical training, are allowed to work as physicians in Germany. They have to get their Approbation (license to practice medicine) from the state health authorities (Bezirksregierung), who are the responsible licensing bodies. But they must prove, that they have sufficient knowledge of the German language.

If you really want to go to Germany, start now learning German as soon as possible. Afterwards contact the hospitals that offer your specialty and find out if they have vacancies. If they're interested in you they will help you with the requirements that you have to fulfill.
