Techniques, Costume and Music of Manipuri Dance :

 

Ras Leela of Radha Krishna, stories from Vishnu Puran, Geeta Gavindam etc are the basis theme of Manipuri Dance.

Head, Hands and feet movement of Manipuri dancers move together in ideal and faultless concord. Rasa is created by entire body. Men’s dance is swift and vigorous and is characterized by leaps and sitting positions, on the other hand women’s dance is distinguished by smooth, gliding feminine movements.

Costumes are rich and vibrant colors with jewelries.

 

Costumes of Manipuri Dance rich and vibrant colors with attractive jewelries are used as Manipuri dance costumes. In the time of Ras Leela Gopis wear a red dress while Radha appears with green apparel. Krishna is seen wearing a dhoti with embroidered bands across his chest. In the Ras-Leela, Krishna is strikingly dressed in a pleated dhoti of gold or saffron silk. 

Accompanying instruments in Manipuri dance are Bansuri, Sri Khol, Mridangam, Khanjira etc. Generally soft music or kirtan pattern songs (a folk song style of Vaishnavism) are used as Dance music.
