The Genesis of Linkin Park

Linkin Park's journey began in 1996 in the small bedroom studio of emcee/vocalist Mike Shinoda. Shinoda and guitarist Brad Delson,Linkin Park Tickets: A Thousand Suns World Tour Articles who had been high school friends, recorded the group's initial music material. They were soon joined by drummer Rob Bourdon, whom they also met in high school. Shinoda later connected with DJ Joseph Hahn while studying illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Formation and Early Struggles

During his time at UCLA, Delson shared an apartment with bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell. Phoenix left the band after college but rejoined a year later. Initially named Xero, the band recorded several demo tracks but struggled to get signed. Realizing the need for a dedicated vocalist, Shinoda placed an ad, which led to the recruitment of Chester Bennington, a talented singer from Arizona who had been making records since he was 16.

"When I was two, I used to run around singing Foreigner songs—there are tapes of me doing that... since I learned how to talk, I've been telling everyone I was going to grow up to be a singer," Bennington once said.

Evolution of the Band Name

After Bennington joined, the band renamed itself Hybrid Theory, symbolizing their blend of rock and rap. However, due to a trademark conflict with another band named Hybrid, they had to change their name. Some of the discarded names included Clear, Probing Lagers, Ten PM Stocker, and Platinum Lotus Foundation. Eventually, they settled on Linkin Park, inspired by Lincoln Park in Santa Monica, which Bennington passed on his way home from band practice. The domain "lincolnpark.com" was too expensive, so they altered the spelling to "Linkin Park."

Breakthrough and Success

Hybrid Theory: The Debut Album

In 1999, Linkin Park signed with Warner Bros. Records and released their debut album, Hybrid Theory, in 2000. Notably, the album is free of profanity, setting it apart from many other nu-metal records of the time.

Touring and Collaborations

Linkin Park joined Ozzfest in 2001, touring with Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Crazy Town, Papa Roach, and Disturbed. They also launched their own tour, Projekt Revolution, featuring acts like Cypress Hill, Adema, DJ Z-Trip, Xzibit, Mudvayne, and Blindside.

In 2002, they released Reanimation, a remix album of Hybrid Theory, which included a remix of "Points of Authority."

Meteora and Beyond

In 2003, Linkin Park released their second studio album, Meteora, which debuted at number one in the US and UK and number two in Australia. The album included singles such as "Somewhere I Belong," "Faint," "Numb," "From the Inside," and "Breaking the Habit." They joined forces with Limp Bizkit and Metallica for the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003, resulting in the release of the Live in Texas CD/DVD set.

In 2004, Linkin Park embarked on the Meteora World Tour, featuring P.O.D., Hoobastank, and Story of the Year. They also toured with Snoop Dogg, The Used, Korn, and Less Than Jake as part of Projekt Revolution 2004.

Collision Course with Jay-Z

On November 30, 2004, Linkin Park released Collision Course, a collaboration with rapper Jay-Z. The album featured mash-ups of songs from Meteora and Hybrid Theory with Jay-Z's lyrics. Collision Course debuted at number one in the US and reached number 17 in the UK. The single "Numb/Encore" topped the Free Record Shop Download Charts in Holland.
