However, if taken in large amounts it will prove to be very harmful. There is safety if small doses are taken.  It is believed by some countries that there is an effect of saffron on the development of the fetus skin. It is also believed that lighter skinned babies are born due to saffron. However, there have not been any studies that have been carried for proving this. But this should be done for ensuring safety while getting pregnant. This is because only small quantities should be consumed. According to various medical opinions, women are pregnant have to consume only 10 grams of it per day. This is mainly for their safety. There is a final word on the optimum dosage and efficacy. Some factors to be considered while taking saffron during pregnancy:-

One should take a consultation from the obstetrician before consuming saffron. However, fake saffron should be avoided. Plenty of it will be found in the market.

* One should ask the experience of other mothers. A woman should try for getting in touch with pregnant mothers who have consumed saffron during pregnancy. This can tell about the negative and positive experiences while getting pregnant.  After this a woman will be surely in a good position for deciding if something is right or wrong.

* Saffron can be consumed with milk. Three or four strands of saffron should be added to milk. However, it is advised as it will surely improve the digestion of baby. Thus, the skin development of the baby will also be affected. This should be started after the first trimester of pregnancy.

* Saffron can be added to other dishes as well. Few of them can be added to rice, soups and various other dishes. It will give a good flavor. However, one must not exceed the amounts of saffron. Only few strands should be consumed.
