A car accident in Washington state cost the life of a mother Wednesday morning but her daughters managed to survive. It was thanks to her four-year-old that she and her sister survived the fatal early morning car accident by keeping warm under a blanket while it rained for approximately six hours until a passerby stumbled upon them and helped.

At approximately 2 a.m.,Heroic 4-Year-Old Rescues Sister from Car Crash after Mother Dies Articles the accident happened in a remote area of the state near the Pacific Coast while it rained. It was not until after 8 a.m. that another driver noticed the accident.

Officials attribute the survival of the girls to the four-year-olds’ ability to get her and her two-year-old sister out of the vehicle and take cover under a blanket, per KING5. State Troopers stated that both of the girls had been hurt in the accident.

As an inspecting driver traveled past the site of the accident, small details in the arrangement of nature told him something was wrong and prompted him to inspect the area. There was a fresh cut in the bark of a tree along the road with and orange gash, an aberration to the gray nature of the woods. Then beyond the gash he noticed a wreck.

“I just can’t imagine what the little girls were going through,” the driver, Kraai McClure, told KING5. “It could have been a really different ending, but it is, you know, a halfway happy ending.”

The girl’s young 26-year-old mother was on her way to pick up her husband who is a fisherman along the Washington coast. Allegedly he advised her that she and the girls should head home because his boat was going to Portland, Oregon instead.

Troopers identified the 26-year-old as Jessica Rath, who against her husband’s advice decided to head to Portland. An initial look into the case by troopers suggests that Jessica may have fallen asleep behind the wheel while traveling at highway speeds. Her car veered off road then crashed into the series of trees.

“We’re lucky we had someone paying attention or we may not have found them for a long time,” Trooper Russ Winger, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, told The Times. “Hypothermia could have set in if they were found any later.”

Officials saw that both girls were transported to a hospital in Astoria, OR. The youngest was then flown to Portland for treatment to her serious injuries.
