Three reasons why you (most likely) do not manage your career well... And what you could do about it

There is in fact one major reason why most people do not manage their career well: they try to do it on their own. At a time when, food microconsulting - career management for food jobs Articles for anything trivial like booking a hotel, going to the cinema, ordering food or buying online people rely on others’ experience isn’t it interesting that they try to manage one of the most critical parts of their life on their own?

Over the years, while helping and advising people, I have pondered why. My best guess is that it is a mix of the influence of our selective educational system (copying is wrong) and personal “pride” (the self-made-man syndrome). Whichever it is, this is not efficient and certainly not modern.

My clients, to whom I asked why they had not considered using consulting to manage their career (and their business) before we met gave me the following three reasons.

  1. “I did not know it was possible”

Coaching, mentoring, advising seemed in their minds to be the exclusive privilege of the “big guys” and “big companies”. They did not think that they were “worth it” and certainly did not know where to look.

Is there a reason why it should be so? One has the possibility to see a shrink (I knew that you would love the analogy!) to manage one’s private life; shouldn’t one also have access to professional advice when it comes to the second most important part of our lives? I believe so.

  1. “It will be expensive”

The image of consulting, for the people I work with, is that it is very expensive. They did not consider it for themselves as they were convinced that it was not affordable (“I am not a CEO who can charge it to his company, this is my own money”).

If you put together communication costs nearing zero nowadays and the “Uberisation” of services, you may agree with me that there is no reason why personal consulting should be over-expensive anymore.

  1. “It will be long and complicated”

My clients were in fact as scared about this as about costs. The image they had in mind was one of a complex process with “dubious” results. They wanted a simple, tailored (“I don’t need a one-size-fits-all type of consultant advice”), short (“hours, not days”) and direct process with clear deliverables (“I want to know what I need to do next”). And on top without commitment (“pay and go”).

I have created food microconsulting with the aim to make personal consulting available to “normal” people within one click. It is simple, fast and affordable… Like most successful services nowadays.

You are very welcome to try and see what it can do for your career or business.
