Carpets and rugs can begin to get a musty odor, especially when it's humid or if there are pets in the house. Many of us turn to the sprays and powders available on the market that promise to make your carpeting smell fresh and clean. Those sprays that promise to eliminate odors, leaving your carpet smelling clean and fresh? The clean smell went away as soon as the spray dried.

There is,Doing a Natural Carpet Cleaner to Keep the Smell Fresh and New Articles and, as with most things, if you want something done right, you'll have to do it yourself! This homemade concoction will remove odors, leave your carpet smelling fresh, is inexpensive, and is completely all natural. Want to learn how to make it? It's way tough, so pay close attention!

  1. Pour one small box of baking soda into the container of your choice (more on this later.)
  2. Add a couple of handfuls of aromatic flowers or leaves (see sidebar for some ideas here.)
  3. Add a drop or two of essential oils, if you want more fragrance. If you just want a light, clean scent, or if you don't have essential oils on hand, feel free to skip this step.
  4. Shake or stir to combine.

Using commercial cleaners and air fresheners add toxic chemicals to the air. Baking soda is a natural, cheap and effective deodorizer and cleaner. Rather than adding more fragrances and toxic chemicals to the air, baking soda actually absorbs odors without damaging material.

To keep carpets smelling fresh, make a habit of sprinkling baking soda on them 15 minutes before vacuuming. And put a little in the vacuum bag to keep that smelling good as well between uses.

While many commercial carpet deodorizers contain baking soda, they also contain strong synthetic fragrances that cause indoor air pollution. Instead, add an essential oil to baking soda for a naturally smelling homemade natural carpet deodorizer.

Why Does This Work?

It works simply. Baking soda is a proven deodorizer. It absorbs odors, which is why so many of us keep a box in the fridge. The aromatics give the baking soda a light scent once you combine them, so once you sprinkle it onto your carpets, unpleasant odors are replaced with light, natural fragrance.

Basic Recipe for an Aromatherapy Carpet Freshener

You will need 8 ounces of baking soda, 45 drops of the essential oils of your choice, and a plastic baggie.

Open up your plastic baggie (a one quart size will do) and dump in your baking soda. Next, add in your essential oil drops. Next, zip up the plastic baggie and shake it around, manually massaging the bag to break up and disperse any clumps of baking soda that may have clotted together. After about a minute of shaking and massaging, voila! You're done.
