In silicone implants, a silicone shell is filled with silicon gel. The silicone being, a natural and soft element is less prone to wrinkles and maintains its shape, even if the implant happens to rupture inside the body. There is also a rare chance of silicone entering in and interfering with the blood stream.

In saline implants, the solution used is the salt water similar in consistency with the body fluids that the body normally absorbs in case of any rupture. However there is a chance of saline gradually decreasing in volume and leading to deflation, besides the chance of wrinkling, unlike in the cases of silicones.

In some countries, soya bean oil filled or titanium coated implants were in use that had to be later removed by their beneficiaries under medical advice. There is also a claim that the micro polyurethane -coated implant is more compatible to the body as the sponge like structure allows the tissues to grow into it and it is less prone to capsular contracture compared with other methods. The silicone breast implants are approved for all ages of women by the F.D.A of United States. No direct link between silicone breast implants and cancerous growths is established from the medical studies made so far.
