Nioxin Reviews – Does Nioxin Work?

Nioxin, commonly used to refer to the Nioxin system 1 cleanser (shampoo), is actually a brand name for 8 differing hair-thinning systems. Nioxin products are very popular, due in part to their effective marketing campaigns and offering commissions to salons and stylists that sell their systems.

Finding legitimate Nioxin reviews can be difficult as well.

Does Nioxin work?

It depends on what is causing your hair loss.

In general, Nioxin will work well for women and will likely not be as effective for males. There scientific reasons for this.

Male hair loss is primarily caused by DHT attaching to hair follicle that are not genetically programed to withstanding inflammation and progressive miniaturization from this androgenic hormone.

Despite the claims of Nioxin, there are absolutely no ingredients that have scientific support in any of their hair systems or products that can reduce or inhibit scalp DHT. The only shampoo ingredient that is clinically proven to topically inhibit scalp DHT is “ketoconazole”. Ketoconazole is not found in Nioxin. At best, Nioxin contains several high-quality anti-inflammatory ingredients such as cocamidopropyl betaine, and coenzyme 10-a. Inflammation certainly plays a role in pattern baldness but it is not the primary cause in male hair thinning.

If you are a male, I encourage you to use a ketoconazole shampoo that directly addresses the main cause of male pattern baldness.

Nioxin, however, may and seemingly will be effective for combating certain types of female hair loss. Unlike men’s hair loss, female hair loss is not well understood and can could by a host of factors – especially hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies or other autoimmune conditions that can cause hair loss. This is not to suggest that Nioxin will correct these circumstances, but it may help revive your hair if you are experiencing non-androgenic hair loss.

You should always check with your doctor to see if the hair loss you are experiencing is a symptom of an underlying medical condition.

Nioxin reviews from females are very positive. On beauty forums, Amazon.com and other cosmetic Internet websites – women speak very highly of Nioxin products. If your hair loss is the result of scalp inflammation or nutritional inadequacies, Nioxin will probably help. It will not regrow hair follicles that are miniaturized by dihydrotesterone.

Nioxin makes three claims:

First, Nioxin claims that their hair thinning systems and ingredients will make your hair grow faster.

Second, Nioxin claims that you will probably observe a “thickening effect” after using the Nioxin system. They claim that 9 out of 10 people, “perceive a thickening effect”.

Lastly, Nioxin claims that their systems will prevent or reduce hair loss by “[removing] environmental residue and DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

Let’s explore these claims.

First, Nioxin will likely improve your hair growth. Although it does not contain ingredients that will prevent androgen (DHT) related hair loss, it does contain ingredients such as cyanocobalamin (topically vitamin B12), biotin and niacin that will promote hair growth.

Second, in my personal experience and confirmed by hundreds of nioxin reviews on beauty and hair care forums, Nioxin hair thinning systems will deliver a “thickening effect” as compared to the average shampoo. It gives your hair density and gives an overall “thickening effect”. Basically, it improves the appearance of your hair.

Third and finally, unfortunately, Nioxin will not slow or reduce hair that is cause by dihydrotestosterone. This is confirmed by both Dr. Robert Bernstein and Dr. William Rassman, hair restoration physicians that are senior members of the American Hair Loss Association and the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons. It simply does not have any ingredients that combat DHT.

Nioxin also offers a “recharging complex” which is basically vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This formula works well to growth/regrow hair for women who are experiencing non-DHT related alopecia.

Overall, Nioxin is a high quality shampoo that will improve the appearance of your hair and may help women with their hair loss. Men should use a ketoconazole shampoo to prevent hair loss. For more information about Nioxin hair care products, systems and shampoos please visit: Nioxin Reviews
