Let’s face it the days of the plain wicker picnic basket are over. The old Yogi Bear picnic style basket with the two top lids and the plain handle are a thing of the past. If you still own one of these baskets maybe it’s time you looked at what today’s baskets have to offer. Make no mistake you can still find wicker baskets with two top lids and the plain handle today. However, today picnic baskets have as many colors, styles, and shapes as the clothing we wear it seems.

Do you have a favorite color? Maybe you have more than one or a particular shade of a primary color. There is a picnic basket out there today colored your favorite color. They come in all the colors of the rainbow and the colors in-between. Wicker baskets are lined with cotton in your color. Wooden polyester baskets are completely covered front and back and top to bottom in it. Same goes for the backpack and insulated / collapsible baskets. Colors bright or dull they have them all.

Now that we briefly mentioned some of today’s styles lets go more in depth. The woven wicker style picnic baskets today follow the same weaving concept they did 20 and 30 years ago. However,The Picnic Baskets of Today Articles today there are more options with the size of the wicker itself, more color options we went over last paragraph which includes colored wicker itself, as well as more shapes and sizes that we will be discussing below. When you think of a wooden box you think maybe a box to ship items. You probably don’t think of a picnic basket. Wooden baskets are some of the, in my opinion, nicest looking baskets today. I’m not talking about simply bare wood like say a coffee table. I’m talking about the wooden baskets that are covered in a material like polyester. If you want a basket with your favorite color all over it these are the baskets for you. The next few some may say are not true picnic baskets and I am not here to argue that point. They simply function better than normal picnic baskets in certain situations. An example is the backpack picnic basket. It is exactly as it sounds a backpack. They are sold by stores who sell picnic basket sets with picnic items already in them. Think about the situation that you want to go on a picnic on a mountain overlook that can only be reached by hiking up a trail. I believe you would agree it would be much easier to carry your supplies with you on your back instead of hurting your back carrying it in your hands or over your shoulder. Next we have the insulated and sometimes collapsible baskets. These are basically aluminum foil lined coolers. Like the backpacks they can be sold with picnic items in them and serve a certain function. Say you want to have an all day picnic. These baskets are thick and well insulated to keep your food and drinks cold.

The shapes of today’s picnic baskets are made for both aesthetic reasons as well as functionality. A very common shape today is the horizontal or suitcase shaped baskets. These baskets usually have a handle on the front on the basket to carry it like a suitcase. The skinny horizontal appearance when laid flat on the ground is much easier to carry then the bulky old shaped baskets. They make you look like you came prepared when going to your picnic and have thought of everything. Another shape is the often bigger and bulkier square or chest style basket. You guessed it this basket is more or less in the shape of a cube. It is often carried with an attached shoulder strap, two side handles, or, if it is big enough, both. These baskets generally have a lot of space for food and drinks. There are many other less used shapes available as well but these are the major shapes used for today’s baskets.
