Gutter Cleaning Basics

Homeowners should always make sure their gutters are cleaned on a periodic basis.  If they are blocked or otherwise damaged, it can lead to expensive problems in the future.  Instead of hiring someone to do it, you can do it yourself.  It can be a little dangerous cleaning the gutters though.  So, you want to ensure you are careful while getting the job done properly.  Here are some of the basics you need to know.

First of all, it is important for you to wear gloves while cleaning your gutters.  The wet conditions they are subjected to will harbor mold and other harmful substances.  You do not want to get these substances on your hands because they can cause you to get sick.  Wearing gloves will also protect your hands from the sharp edges of your metal gutters.

Unless you are Stretch Armstrong, you will need to use a ladder to reach your gutters.  Ensure the ladder you use is tall enough to allow you to reach the gutters without overextending yourself.  Take all necessary precautions when climbing and working on the ladder.

Instead of cleaning their gutters while standing on a ladder some homeowners sit on the edge of their roof to clean them.  You will want to avoid trying this if your roof's pitch is too steep or made from a slippery material such as tin.  When working from your roof, you should always be wearing a safety harness.

Different types of pests can be found in gutter debris such as wasps, spiders, and ants.  The moist conditions provide an ideal home for these small creatures.  Make sure you are careful when cleaning out debris, while not forgetting to have your gloves on in the process.

There are not many tools you need to clean your gutters out properly.  A standard garden hose will come in handy for clearing away loose debris.  Try to use a hose with plenty of length so you do not have a hard time stretching it where you need to clean.

It is also a good idea to take a scraper of some sort up there to help clean your gutters.  Dirt may be difficult to remove, especially when combined with water.  Using a scraper will make it much easier to get it out of your gutters.

Try to clean your gutters at least twice each year.  Remember to stay safe while doing so.
