It may seem like gutter repair and replacement is a fairly straightforward job. How hard can it be to mend a few holes or put up some new pieces? While some basic maintenance tasks are so straightforward that most DIYers without a fear of heights can manage,Is It Time For Gutter Repair Or Replacement? Articles when tackling on the more complex jobs, it is probably better to hire a professional. With proper care and installation, your rain drainage system should be able to last in excess of twenty years.

The first thing to do is clean out the trenches and downspouts thoroughly. Obstructions and dirt buildup can affect performance (and this is a task that should be performed regularly anyways). Once they have been well cleaned all around, it is time to wait for some rain, although, if you live in a drier climate or are working off-season, a hose may substitute in a pinch. Once you get the water flowing through, check for leaks, holes, or areas where the water builds up due to convex dents in the surface.

The downspout should be emptying the drainage ten feet or more away from your homes foundation. You may want to check to ensure it isn't directed anywhere where it can over-soak flowerbeds or leak onto pathways. Take note of any significant rust or areas around the roof where there is excessive water runoff, which could benefit from drainage. If you are able to check them in the rain, look for weaknesses such as bowing. These are areas that may be in danger of falling from the roof.

If you've got a few tools, a ladder, and a little bit of skill, you probably can attempt some gutter repair on your own. A good place to start is by fixing any loose areas, ensuring all bolts are tightened up against the roof and are aligned correctly. Missing or loosened downspouts may also be replaced for more efficient drainage. If it's the aesthetics that's the problem, most can be easily painted to better match the home, but be sure to properly waterproof your efforts.

When replacing an entire system or large portion, it is better to call for professional gutter repair. Not only does it require specialized tools, but also you want to avoid damaging your home and siding. Removing them requires great care so as not to pry loose the fascia boards. When attaching the new ones, they need to be placed at exactly the right angle so the water can flow correctly. Stagnant water pools can lead to mosquito infestation or the growth of weeds and algae in the trenches. Slow drainage can also cause problems. The job will require more than one person due to the large and awkwardly shaped materials required. If you have the box type (those that are attached to the home, commonly found on older, historical homes) you want to take extra precautions repairing them as leaks can cause mold or wood rot, and replacing the system can be costly and difficult.
