We’re probably more concerned about what's in our wallets rather than what the wallet looks like. The humble wallet is one of those accessories that doesn’t rate high on the list when shopping for that new fashion statement. We seem to focus on practicality rather than style. Yet this doesn’t need to be the case. Let’s take a look at some options for your next wallet.

But there is no reason why your next wallet shouldn’t also be a fashionable accessory that can make you stand out in a crowd. The Sporty Wallet. Usually made from lightweight nylon, twill, vinyl, or rubber, these sporty wallets are less expensive than leather wallets, unless you're referring to big designer labels that charge ridiculous amounts. The more casual wallets may use Velcro, adding to the sporty look. These wallets are usually durable and waterproof, but fall short on style appeal.

The Classy Walet. Next come the more classy leather wallets. These vary greatly in price and quality depending on the materials used. Bi-fold wallets are popular, yet tri-fold wallets would probably be more suitable if you need to carry a heap of credit cards and/or business cards Cow leather is by far the most common and least expensive.

An ostrich leather wallet screams elegance, style and is much more expensive due to the complicated and time consuming tanning procedures. Other alternatives to cow leather include exotic leathers such as crocodile leather wallets, stingray leather wallets and even shark skin and lizard skin wallets.

If you’re buying a wallet for someone as a gift, take time to think about it and match the wallet with the personality. Not easy you say? Well I wouldn’t expect crocodile Dundee to be carrying anything other than a croc wallet would you? Do you have a keen fisherman in the family? How about a shark skin wallet, shark leather is in fact far stronger than cow leather and would last a lifetime. Highly polished stingray leather wallets known as shagreen leather are extremely popular in Japan and are even fire resistant!

There are many fake leather wallets and leather products on the market so it pays to give the wallet a good going over. Does it smell of leather? Check the grain of the leather to see if its not just an embossed pattern. A good quality leather wallet should have tight and even stitching as well. Although most wallets on the market conform to standard sizes, it pays to check if your cards and bills fit neatly into the wallet.

Lastly, if you’re looking for something completely unique that has not been mass produced, you might want to checkout wallets made from exotic leathers.
